On the north-northwest side of Chicago there is an abandoned viaduct that traverses across the city. When I first moved to Chicago I always found myself wondering where this viaduct traveled and how to get up there. In the summer, green grass hangs over the yellow and white concrete edge of the bridges, and seemed to me a place that would be great to explore, or a least a place to enjoy the sun and the late night city lights.
Well, a couple days ago, some friends and I finally ventured out to walk
the viaduct and a sense of vastness in a dense city emerged. Raised above the ground, the viaduct is about three miles long and the built landscape changes drastically from one end to the other. I even have heard a little rumor that the city may turn this into a green "open" space or a biker trail to downtown (hey bikers, no more car doors to avoid). Lately, I have been pondering what Chicago would look like if these choices started to be implemented into our urban landscapes. I guess time will tell. Anyways, if you are in need of some space and room to ponder the urban landscape, go walk the viaduct, but don't forget to bring some rubber boots.
