act out art
I came across this video while researching how youth can get involved in art interventions. This video is from The Design Studio for Art Intervention, an organization made up of artists, activists, academics, and other social interventionists, based in Massachusetts. Here is their version of "reactivating space like never before" during a crosswalk of tug of war. I love how they stop traffic.

that's great! i think so often youth don't 'get' art interventions or installations. their concept of art is based in the traditional, a painting, a drawing, a photograph. but when they do get it, when someone talks with them about it, the ideas and interventions they do come up with or get involved in are amazingly creative and fun! thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteyeah, I think we as artists just need to approach art interventions in a way where youth can grasp the concept, become engaged and get whatever they can get from it. It is hard to find intervention examples because they are such ephemeral and conceptual forms of art and performance and not easily documented. i am looking for more, let me know if you find any. I would love it if this could be integrated into art education successfully. We'll see if it is possible.
ReplyDeleteOh, it's possible. We just have to figure out how. Maybe we could encourage small scale "practice interventions" in the student's homes? Reorganizing the refrigerator by color. Next step: what type of food brands are using which colors for their labels? Look, you just taught me!
