arts integration is the 21st century skill

After reading the articles about 21st century skills, the debate over computers and labtops in the classroom, and reviewing the CAPE website,  I only have one thing to say:  ARTS INTEGRATION IS THE 21ST CENTURY SKILL.  As seen on the CAPE website, students are asked to use a variety of critical thinking/problem-solving skills, technology, and creative processes to investigate issues or problems linked to their everyday lives.  With the help of resident artists and their teachers, students are not only becoming familiar with technology in a constructive, effective manner, but learning how to use technology when most appropriate while approaching subjects that are meaningful and exciting.  Striking a balance with technology in the classroom is key and dabbling with the extremes will only bring problems.

  2. What a great point, Meaghan! Yes, arts integration does bring so much of what students
(and teachers) today need together. Now if only we could get funders and the government to see the light!

And I also like your point about a balance. In so much of my work, I see people who do fall one way or another on issues. Making the point that it's all or nothing for arts, technology, pedagogy. It's never that black and white. We need to be able to take things that work and bring them together, and with tech in classrooms, striking the balance is absolutely the thing. just because one approach didn't work, don't take all the computer out of a room. make adjustments! figure it out! no pendulum swinging! and i'm using exclamation points too much. sorry about that. :)
